“I wanted the best, so I did a lot of research. That’s why I chose St. Francis Hospital.”

When 62-year-old Richard Lechner was diagnosed with prostate cancer in late 2021, the Long Island resident drove an hour across the island to receive his care from the skilled and compassionate team of experts at St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center in Roslyn. The grandfather of five, who spends his weekends outdoors, wanted to ensure he’d be able to return to his active lifestyle.

St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center provides tailored health care for men at all stages of life. Our programs offer comprehensive services, from routine annual exams to the latest advances in surgical treatments. We make it easy for you to find expert care in specialties like cardiology, gastroenterology, urology and more.

For Lechner, obtaining access to the most advanced surgical treatment allowed him to return to his weekends on the water and the golf course. In January 2022, Lechner received a robotic prostatectomy, a minimally invasive surgery to remove the prostate and nearby tissues with the utmost precision. Dr. David Samadi, director of Men’s Health and Urologic Oncology at St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center, explains, “Compared with traditional open surgery, patients who undergo robotic prostatectomy recover sooner and with much fewer complications, in addition to less blood loss and pain.”

Lechner is now cancer free and has returned to work as an electrician, as well as his weekend hobbies of golf, boating and fishing. He and his wife recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary along with their two sons and five grandchildren.

“I feel better than I did before the cancer!” he says.
